Instagram or Facebook account disabled: the routes that really exist

Your account was disabled "for not following community standards". You appealed, sent a video of your face, perhaps an ID, and got an automated message back: the decision is final. Here, in order, is what still exists. Verified on 19 September 2026.

What you need to know first

Only Meta can restore an account. No provider, no "ethical hacker", no paid service can do it from outside. Those who promise it sell, at best, the same steps described here, and at worst a scam. This guide promises nothing either: it describes the official routes and their limits.

Two dates matter: the day the account was disabled and the day your appeal was answered. Take a screenshot of each message, with its date and its reference number if there is one.

1. The internal appeal, if you have not done it yet

From the app, try to sign in. On the disabled-account message, follow "Learn more" or "Appeal". Meta usually asks for an identity check: a selfie video, sometimes an ID document. Keep the answer, even an automated one.

If the appeal has already been refused, do not repeat it in a loop: go to step 2. Do not create a new account with the same details in the meantime either; some platforms treat that as evasion.

2. The European route: the Appeals Centre Europe

Under the European Digital Services Act (the DSA), large platforms must accept that an independent body, certified by a European regulator, reviews their moderation decisions. For Facebook and Instagram that body is the Appeals Centre Europe, based in Ireland.

What you need to know, verified on its website on 19 September 2026:

  • It reviews content removals and account suspensions or disablings based on "community standards". It does not review decisions based on fraud, fake accounts, security, minimum age or intellectual property.
  • It is open to anyone located in the European Union.
  • It is free for the user at the time of writing.
  • Meta's decision must be less than six months old when you file. This is the condition that closes the most cases: do not let it pass.
  • You do not have to have exhausted the internal appeal, but it is advised.
  • Filing is online: https://portal.appealscentre.eu/
  • You need: an e-mail address, the account name, if possible the reference number Meta gave you, the screenshots, and a statement of at most 3,500 characters.
  • Announced decision time: up to 90 days, 180 for complex cases.
  • The decision is not binding on Meta, but Meta must respond to it in good faith, and accounts are restored this way. Others are not.

What makes the difference in the statement: dated facts rather than emotions. What you post, since when, the absence of disputed content as far as you know, exactly what Meta's message said, what your appeal received as an answer, and, if the account served your business, what its closure concretely costs you.

3. Your data, independently of the account

Even if the account stays closed, the General Data Protection Regulation gives you the right to a copy of your data: photos, posts, messages, contacts (GDPR article 15). The automatic download in the settings is no longer reachable on a disabled account; you go through a written request to Meta, via its privacy form or its data protection officer. Meta must answer within one month. Without an answer, your national data protection authority can be contacted (in France, the CNIL).

4. If the account served your business

This is the most painful case: years of clients on an account you never owned, closed by an automated decision. The route above is still the first thing to do. The second, once the storm has passed, is to stop depending on an account you do not own: a website in your name, your client list with you, and social networks as a front door, not a foundation.

What we can do

You can follow this guide on your own; it is written for that. If you prefer someone to check with you that your case qualifies, prepare the statement and accompany you to the filing, that is our work: Hacked, disabled or locked-out account. We do not promise the outcome; we prepare the file.
